Call of Duty: World at War details

by Beau King June 23rd 2008 2:06 PM CDT0 Comments

When it comes to the Call of Duty franchise, developer Treyarch gets a pretty bad rap. We here at XF have even thrown in a punch or two. However, we have never counted them out completely; for good reason too. When taking into account that the developer was given a two year window to work on their newest title versus a measly 8 months we can finally see their potential.

Recently thrust upon Xbox Live was a trailer depicting the true nitty-gritty of battle. Also showcased was the same COD4 engine we’ve so adored. Today, Activision and Treyarch have continued the momentum with all new screens and details. These details are by no means elementary either.

After the jump is a full preview of what’s to come.

A resounding moan was heard across the gaming world upon hearing of COD5’s trip back to familiar territory; WWII. Treyarch recognizes the grumbling but promises the best world war experience to date. This experience is supposed to span the Pacific Theatre AND European front, namely in the eastern realm as the Russians fought toward a pyrrhic victory in Berlin.

Further quelling cynical talk are some new multiplayer details. Call of Duty: World at War will feature a fully functioning and dynamic co-op system. Up to four players will be able fully immerse themselves in all out battle. The best part is that all four players can drop in and out as they see fit. The army of one motto no longer applies here.

As well, online play will contain a rank and matchmaking system that pits equally matched players closer together. The way to build rank and perk sets is through both the campaign and online. That way the gamer that completes the campaign before hitting Live will not be at a grave disadvantage.

With all these improvements in line I have officially jumped off the hater’s bandwagon. I guess I should have listened in school, “never judge a book by its cover.”
